franchise.co.nz – PUTTING PEOPLE IN BUSINESS
53
It was over a coffee with the owner of the Quinovic Viaduct franchise in
Auckland when property investor Jonno Lum was first asked if he would be
interested in buying into the Quinovic property management franchise. He
investigated the business opportunity further – loved the ‘people-are-a-priority’
aspect promoted by the franchise and the fact that it wasn’t a big corporate
entity – and purchased a share of the Viaduct franchise in October 2023.
“Quinovic is all about owner-operators and family businesses passionate
about service and people,” he says. “It’s also about empowering and
encouraging people and I felt that it all aligned perfectly with my own values.”
Jonno had previous experience as a pastor – a role that also required a high
level of stewardship – and he views the Quinovic franchise in the same light.
“As stewards we are entrusted to look after what is arguably a person’s most
significant investment. Often, a single property is their whole nest-egg. So, it’s
about delivering both care and return.”
Jonno has since become the owner of four Quinovic Auckland franchises –
Auckland City Centre, Ponsonby, Parnell and Viaduct – and all achieved in
the space of just two years.
Parrish Wong, Quinovic’s CEO, believes Jonno’s ongoing success in his
franchise ownership journey can be attributed to his clear vision for both his
goals and the practical steps needed to achieve them.
Exceptional all-round experience
“As a service-led organisation, Quinovic’s focus is on delivering an
exceptional experience for tenants, property owners and our franchisees,”
explains Parrish.
“With the opportunity to invest in a multi-office ownership model, franchisees
like Jonno can tailor each office’s structure and service mix to the specific
market it serves. They can create meaningful pathways for their staff through
shared resources, specialised roles and progression opportunities across the
different offices.
“This approach not only enhances local market fit – whether that’s short-term
or long-term rentals, apartments or standalone homes – and operational
efficiency, it also helps maintain consistent high standards across the whole
Quinovic network.
“As franchisor, we believe people are the heart of any service organisation,
and professional development is essential to cultivating the next generation
of leaders and owners.”
Parrish says this is evidenced by the number of franchise offices now led by
individuals who began their careers as Quinovic employees and are today
proud franchise owners.
Sustained long-term growth
The speed at which it’s possible to build a significant multi-unit Quinovic
franchise business is perfectly illustrated by Jonno’s example. He attributes
a large part of his success in expanding the business to the support of
Quinovic’s group office. “Their guidance, training and mentorship have been
the key components to the backing provided to us young owners.
“A proven track record, the wealth of knowledge generously shared from
others within the brand and the systems that reflect that, as well as the
calibre of the people surrounding you and a head office that is highly
motivated to partner with each franchisee – all of this adds up to sustained
long-term growth.”
Jonno is an enthusiastic supporter of Quinovic’s use of ‘systemised excellence’
– making use of technology to enhance the tenant and property owner
experience, and to serve better relationships.
“For example, AI (artificial intelligence) allows us to zone in on particular
pain-points and more importantly, it helps us systemise excellence within the
franchise and enable property managers to demonstrate excellence in all the
various aspects of property management,” he says.
The time is (always) right
No matter how the overall economy is performing, or where the property
cycle happens to be, long-term property management will always be a
resilient and robust sector that can ride out any economic troughs along the
way, believes Jonno. “Rental property services are an ongoing need, it’s not a
commodity, and owners will always want a manager whom they can trust to
manage their properties.
“This is why a Quinovic franchise is such a robust business,” he explains. “Of
course you need to manage the impacts of slower economic times, but the
fact is people still need to rent houses or apartments, so the demand never
goes away.”
Time to take the lead
Do you have strong service, people and technology skills, as well as sound
financial and business acumen? Are you genuinely committed to delivering
outstanding service to property owners and tenants? Can you see yourself
leading by example to foster a culture of excellence in your own team?
Then long-term property management is your calling, believes Jonno, and a
Quinovic property management franchise deserves closer inspection.
From a modest initial franchise investment, coupled with low overheads
and a recurring revenue stream, Quinovic provides a quickly scalable
business opportunity.
“Our ideal franchisee combines sound financial and business acumen with
a genuine commitment to delivering outstanding service to property owners
and tenants,” says Parrish Wong.
“Like Jonno, our best franchisees lead
by example. They recruit great people,
develop great teams and foster a culture
of accountability, support and excellence.
They also understand that consistent,
high-quality service builds long-term trust
and business value.
